WFP’s Regional Bureau for the Middle East and Northern Africa (RBC), based in Cairo, Egypt, provides strategic guidance, policy/technical support and direction to WFP operations and activities in 16 countries: Algeria, Armenia, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Moldova, Morocco, State of Palestine, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine and Yemen. These country offices aim to assist roughly one-third of all of WFP’s beneficiaries (approx. 30 million) in some of the most critical humanitarian emergencies of our time. RBC is also active in the ‘Changing Lives’ side of WFP’s mandate, helping national governments and local communities improve nutrition, livelihoods, school feeding, social protection, climate and disaster risk reduction and other programmes that build resilience and support development.

**JOB PURPOSE**:
The current state of humanitarian response in the Regional Bureau for the Middle East, Northern Africa and Eastern Europe (RBC) is characterized by increasingly complex and protracted conflict-driven crisis involving a multiplicity of challenges related to food safety and quality. As a result, WFP is working to increase the presence of a Regional Food Safety and Quality Assurance, following a risk-based approach, including direct support on to Country Offices.

The Regional Bureau Cairo (RBC) is therefore seeking a Food Technologist to support Supply Chain activities with responsibilities and expected qualifications described below. This profile will work to support FSQ activities assuring that they are embedded in all WFP’s assistance modalities and processes in the Region, in a particularly challenging operational context.

**KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)**:
**_ Operations:_**
- Implement and monitor established protocols and tools relating to food technology issues and food safety and quality, ensuring alignment with global and regional WFP supply chain strategy, policies and plans.
- Provide operational and technical support on upstream food safety and quality activities, including approval and monitoring of suppliers, management of audits in the region, testing and Q&Q Inspection.
- Provide technical and operational support on developing and updating food specifications specific for the region and countries, that are aligned with global and local food standards.
- Provide operational and technical support on downstream food safety and quality activities, including advice on procedures for mitigating and documenting food quality and safety issues during food transit and storage in warehouses. This includes, but it’s not limited to Good Distribution Practices, pest control, fumigation, and traceability.
- Implement and monitor established protocols and tools in RBC that enable rapid response to situations with food safety and quality concerns, include Food Incident Management (FIM) protocols.
- Provide technical guidance and input to RBC and country offices in the design and implementation of medium scale and/or relatively straight forward food assistance programmes, ensuring compliance with WFP food and safety and quality guidelines.
