Project Business Manager

Overview:

The Project Business Manager (PBM) oversees all commercial, financial, and administrative elements involved in executing an EPC project. Acting as the project's central business interface, the PBM brings together cost management, scheduling, Earned Value analysis, contracting, procurement, finance, risk oversight, and reporting to support profitability, compliance, and overall commercial performance across the entire project lifecycle.

This position collaborates closely with the Project Manager and technical discipline leads to ensure that business outcomes align with project goals and contractual commitments, while maintaining full adherence to required reporting, governance practices, and control procedures set by both the company and the client.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Control

• Lead development of project budgets, forecasts, and cost-control systems aligned with EPC contract requirements.
• Manage the financial model, including cash flow, revenue recognition, and margin analysis.
• Monitor cost and schedule performance, address variances, and recommend corrective actions.
• Prepare monthly cost reports, variance analyses, and management dashboards.
• Support quarterly forecasts and corporate financial reviews.
• Oversee invoice approvals, billing milestones, and payment certifications.
• Ensure compliance with IFRS, internal policies, and audit standards.

Contract & Commercial Management

• Advise the Project Manager on EPC contract interpretation and commercial compliance.
• Manage change orders, claims, and variations, including cost and schedule impact assessments.
• Coordinate with legal and contracts teams on risk mitigation and governance.
• Administer subcontract and supplier agreements, including milestones, retention, and bonds.
• Maintain insurance, guarantees, letters of credit, and other commercial documentation.
• Track and report contractual obligations, deliverables, and KPIs.

Project Controls Integration

• Oversee cost control, planning, and document control to ensure integrated reporting.
• Maintain project control systems for cost, progress, and productivity tracking.
• Support risk management by monitoring exposures and updating the risk register.
• Validate earned value metrics against established baselines.
• Participate in reviews, audits, and performance assessments.

Procurement & Supply Chain Support

• Coordinate with procurement on commitments, supplier invoices, and expediting.
• Align procurement deliverables with project forecasts.
• Support vendor evaluations and cost-optimization initiatives.
• Ensure accuracy and clarity of procurement reporting.

Leadership & Governance

• Provide financial and commercial guidance to project leadership.
• Support risk assessments, internal audits, and compliance reviews.
• Mentor project controls and finance personnel.
• Uphold corporate governance, ethics, and anti-bribery standards.
• Contribute to lessons learned and best-practice development.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, Engineering, or related field.
• 8–15 years' experience in financial/commercial roles within EPC or major infrastructure projects.
• Strong knowledge of EPC contract models and commercial risk management.
• Proficiency with cost-control and ERP tools (SAP, Oracle, Primavera Cost, EcoSys).
• Solid understanding of IFRS/GAAP and earned value management; Primavera P6 preferred.
• Experience in budgeting, forecasting, and reporting for large EPC projects.
• Strong analytical, modeling, and problem-solving skills.
• Advanced Excel and Power BI capability.
