A Bus Maintenance Director is responsible for overseeing all aspects of a bus fleet's maintenance and repair to ensure safety, efficiency, and compliance with regulations. Key duties include developing and implementing preventive maintenance plans, managing a team of technicians, overseeing budgets, maintaining records, and ensuring compliance with federal and state safety and environmental standards.

Key responsibilities

Fleet maintenance: Ensure all buses and related equipment are in good working order by creating and managing preventive and corrective maintenance plans.

Team management: Lead, train, and supervise maintenance staff, including engineers and technicians.

Budget management: Develop, administer, and monitor departmental budgets, ensuring cost-effectiveness and control.

Regulatory compliance: Guarantee that the fleet adheres to all federal, state, and local safety, environmental, and operational regulations.

Operational support: Work closely with operations to minimize vehicle downtime and ensure the fleet is ready for service.

Record keeping: Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities, costs, and performance metrics.

Inspections and audits: Conduct regular inspections of vehicles and facilities to ensure standards are met and identify areas for improvement.

Procurement: Oversee the purchase of parts, equipment, and supplies needed for maintenance operations.

Required skills and qualifications

Strong technical knowledge of vehicle maintenance and repair.

Experience in preventive maintenance planning and execution.

Proven leadership and management skills.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Knowledge of safety standards and regulatory compliance (e.g., Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration).

Ability to manage budgets and analyze financial data.

Experience with data analytics to track performance metrics.

Familiarity with labor relations, such as union collective bargaining agreements, may be required.
