**University Lecturer in Egyptology & Archaeology in Cairo**

The Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo is seeking a University Lecturer/Assistant Director in Egyptology & Archaeology (0,5 fte).

**What you will do**
In collaboration with the relevant university programmes in the Netherlands and Flanders and the relevant archaeological institutes in Egypt, you will organize an Egyptology/archaeology teaching programme at MA level. During the programme, you will accompany a group of students during visits to academic institutes, museums and excavation projects in Cairo and other parts of Egypt. You will develop new educational activities, and support and co-organize research in Egyptology, Coptology, Papyrology, Archaeology and Museology that is affiliated with NVIC and that is carried out in Egypt. You also conduct your own research, preferably fieldwork. You assist in maintaining the academic network of the NVIC in the field of Egyptology and Archaeology and expand this network. You also develop and contribute to NVIC activities, such as organising lectures, workshops, excursions and courses. As assistant director, you support the director and other NVIC staff members in carrying out their tasks.

**Where you will work**
The Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo was founded in 1971 as an academic institute under the umbrella of Leiden University, in which nine Dutch and Flemish universities participate. The institute stimulates and internationalizes scholarly research, education and research activities in the Near East, mainly in the fields of Arabic studies, Egyptology and Archaeology, Middle Eastern Studies, Social Sciences and Humanities in a wider sense, but the institute also supports other disciplines. The NVIC provides annual teaching programmes for Dutch and Flemish students, but also for non-academic target groups, such as embassies. In addition, the NVIC supervises theses, papers and individual study programmes of students during their stay in Egypt. The institute organizes lectures, conferences and workshops and it publishes the results of academic activities. Finally, the institute contributes to the dissemination of Dutch and Flemish culture and the promotion of Dutch-Egyptian and Flemish-Egyptian cooperation, in close cooperation with the relevant institutions in the Netherlands and Flanders and the embassies of the Netherlands and Belgium in Cairo. You will be working in a close-knit team of 15 permanent Dutch, Flemish, Egyptian, and international employees, and a number of freelance lecturers. You will be part of the institute's academic staff and, in addition to conducting your own teaching and research, you will also facilitate research by third parties in Egypt.

- You have a PhD in one of the relevant disciplines (Egyptology/Archaeology) and a demonstrable wider interest in the other disciplines that are represented at NVIC;
- You are able to conduct research and teaching independently; you have demonstrable experience in teaching;
- You have knowledge of the university education system in the Netherlands and Flanders;
- You have experience with archaeological fieldwork, preferably in Egypt;
- You have knowledge of and experience with modern Egypt;
- You have good organizational and social skills and experience with supervising groups;
- You are flexible, enterprising and enthusiastic;
- You have professional language proficiency (C1) in English; oral skills in Dutch, French and/or German will be useful; knowledge of Arabic, preferably Egyptian Arabic is most welcome.

**What we offer you**

- An employment contract for the duration of one year with the prospect of a permanent position. The contract falls under the collective labour agreement (cao) for Dutch Universities.

- gross per month for a full-time (38 hours) position
