Job Purpose

Lead and manage the formulation development function responsible for designing, developing, optimizing, and scaling-up pharmaceutical products. Ensure scientific excellence, regulatory compliance, and efficient technology transfer to manufacturing to support the company's product pipeline, lifecycle management, and business strategy.

Key Responsibilities

1. Formulation Development

  • Oversee development of new formulations for solid, liquid, semi-solid, or sterile dosage forms.
  • Approve formulation strategies, prototypes, and scientific development plans.
  • Ensure implementation of Quality by Design (QbD), DoE, & risk management tools.
  • Review and approve pre-formulation studies, compatibility studies, and formulation optimization.

2. Process Development & Scale-Up

  • Lead process design, optimization, and scale-up activities to ensure robust and reproducible processes.
  • Supervise pilot-scale trials and support production during technology transfer activities.
  • Ensure readiness for validation batches and provide troubleshooting during commercial manufacturing.

3. Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with QC/Analytical R&D on analytical method selection, stability studies, and specifications.
  • Align with QA to ensure documentation integrity and compliance.
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain and Procurement for raw material selection, alternative sourcing, and cost optimization.
  • Provide expert support to Production during scale-up, validation, and commercial troubleshooting.

4. Project Management

  • Manage R&D project timelines, resources, and budget.
  • Prioritize projects based on business needs (new products, reformulations, cost reduction, stability improvements).
  • Report project progress to senior management with data-driven updates and risk assessment.
  • Ensure smooth execution and completion of development milestones.

5. Innovation & Continuous Improvement

  • Explore new technologies, excipients, formulation platforms, and equipment to enhance product competitiveness.
  • Lead product improvement initiatives (bioequivalence, stability enhancement, process efficiency, cost reduction).
  • Evaluate scientific literature and market trends to support innovation pipeline.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or related field.
  • Postgraduate degree (M.Sc. or PhD) is a strong advantage.

Experience

  • 7–12 years of experience in formulation R&D within pharmaceutical manufacturing.
  • Proven experience in developing multiple dosage forms (OSD, liquids, semisolids, sterile—based on company needs).
  • Strong track record of leading scale-up, technology transfer, and validation.
  • Experience in managing and developing teams.
  • Experience with NFSA products is an advantage

Technical Skills

  • Deep knowledge of formulation science, excipients, and process technology.
  • Strong understanding of QbD, DoE, risk assessment, and ICH guidelines.
  • Strong troubleshooting and scientific problem-solving ability.
  • Proficiency with R&D equipment and pilot-scale machinery.
  • Strong scientific documentation and regulatory submission experience.
