Position Description


At ESB Networks we ensure electricity gets to the homes and businesses of our 2.3 million electricity customers in a safe and efficient manner every day, every hour, and every minute.

ESB Networks' Distribution Planning Team undertakes conventional distribution network planning activities (e.g. planning large demand customer connections including renewable generation). It also plans medium to long term network development (e.g. planning to cater for future demand growth, improving system load indices and power quality).


We are hiring for Network Planners who will be responsible for planning the medium and long-term reinforcement requirements of the Distribution System, planning the connection of new customers to the Distribution System and in the development and approval of planning standards, policies and procedures.


The roles involve the analysis of the MV and 38kV Distribution Networks to determine the optimum method of connection for new customers and the reinforcement requirements to allow for demand growth on the system, and interaction with various internal and external stakeholders.

Planners work closely with other functions within ESB Networks in the design and delivery of Network plans.

They must also liaise with customers, the transmission system operator, and other stakeholders to ensure development is well founded, and meets requirements.


Key Responsibilities

  • Use load flow software (Synergi, PSS syncal, etc.) to carry out studies to assess the impact of embedded generation. RES, flexibility, demand customer connections & reinforcement options on the distribution system and to determine the Least Cost Technically Acceptable connection method.
  • Plan the development and reinforcement requirements of the 110kV, 38kV and MV distribution networks and 220kV bulk supply points in accordance with defined planning standards for 5 to 10 years based on future scenarios of factors such as load growth, energy efficiency and impact of electrification of heat and transport
  • Complete Investment Appraisals and Technical Approval documents as required and ensure that each CAPEX proposal has all supporting documentation for the business cases in place
  • Respond to customer queries and disputes on the proposed customer connection method in a timely manner
  • Verify the accuracy and outputs of other team members studies in line with the agreed procedure if an Approved Verifier and submit work for verification as per the agreed procedure.
  • Project manage innovationled distribution planning improvement projects from initial scoping and development of terms of reference through to implementation of the recommendations.
  • Preparation, development, and implementation of planning related standards, policies and tools as required.
  • Engage with a broad range of stakeholders within industry to listen to what is happening in other jurisdictions and what can be learned from best practice in other utilities.
  • Managing relationships with customers, developers, national planning authorities, city and county councils and local action groups as required
  • Stakeholder engagements with internal staff, EMP and external bodies including EirGrid and CRU

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential

  • 5 to 7 Years relevant experience (consideration may be given to relevant further education)
  • Knowledge and experience of electrical network engineering.
