The Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities. Interns must be between 20 and 36 years old and should have less than two years of relevant working experience.

In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:
a) have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities;

b) are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or

c) are sponsored by governmental/non governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.

d) are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months.

e) are between 20 and 36 years of age.

Background Information

To address the combined challenges related to managing human mobility as a result of different migration drivers, incl. climate change and environmental degradation, as well as the gaps in knowledge and migration data in North, East, and West Africa, this program contributes to improved evidence-based migration management and reduced risk of irregular migration and displacement occurring, in the context of disasters, climate change and environmental degradation in countries of origin, transit and destination along key migration corridors in North, East, and West Africa.

The Intern will focus on elements of Human Mobility in the Context of Disaster Climate Change and Environmental Degradation **,**through supporting thematic activities related to Supporting capacity building of governments and relevant authorities for better migration management and addressing the linkage between climate change and irregular migration and forced displacement.

Learning Objectives
- Strengthen capacity of youth/early-career practitioners to become future negotiators and advocates.
- Improve knowledge and awareness on human mobility in the context of disasters, climate change and environmental degradation by developing and distributing communication products, adapted to different audiences.
- Provide skills training to target communities by equipping them with mobile, durable, and sustainable means of livelihood, with a specific focus on youth.
- Design and conduct surveys and in-depth consultations on human mobility in the context of disasters, climate change and environmental degradation, with a particular focus on the impact of climate change on labor mobility, youth and rural-urban movements.
- Strengthen capacities and knowledge of early career researchers and practitioners and youth on data related to Migration, Environment and Climate Change and Risk Reduction (MECR);
- Assist with operational aspects of the programme in conjunction with country office.
- Attend internal meetings related to operational areas of IOM's activities.
- Assist with the preparation of situational and statistical reports on activities as assigned.
- Assist with the implementation activities of the project.
- Coordinate with other IOM Field Missions, as necessary, to facilitate project development and implementation; and
- Undertake all other tasks as may be assigned.

Training Components and Learning Elements

Through the internship, the intern will become familiar with the International Organizations by working within the UN system and participating in various meetings with internal and external partners; the intern will experience hands-on communication and outreach activities, by assisting in program management and implementation; the intern will also obtain a deeper understanding on migration and climate mobility issues, its regional and national contexts in the MENA region through assisting the research and coordination activities and interaction with the Regional and National UN Network on Migration counterparts; by the end of the internship, the intern with have a better understanding on IOM’s work as the UN Migration Agency and how it interacts with the government, the UN agencies and all the relevant stakeholders who work in the area of migration and climate mobility.

QUALIFICATIONS
Languages

IOM’s official languages are English, French and Spanish.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

A working knowledge of Arabic is also a mandatory requirement for this Internship.
