Job Introduction
BBC Monitoring (BBCM) provides news and information based on our monitoring of open source media from over 150 countries in more than 100 languages and across all platforms.
It is a centre of expertise and an important part of the BBC’s newsgathering operation with journalists based in the UK and international bureaux. Our extensive operation enables us to provide insightful and reliable coverage of political, economic, security and media news. Our round -the-clock reporting of TV, radio, press, news agencies, digital and social media is also provided to commercial clients, partners, and the UK Government.
Main Responsibilities
As a Journalist, you’ll play a pivotal role in meeting the needs of BBC Monitoring’s customers by identifying news and key insights from TV, radio, newspapers and social media in the Middle East and the Gulf. You will produce engaging content in English on a range of different platforms. You will work within a shift pattern, often dictated by events as they happen.
You'll use a variety of tools and techniques to mine the media for story ideas, identify emerging trends and narratives and contribute to advance planning for coverage of key events.
You will need experience as a journalist and be able to identify material that makes a “high impact” story of interest to BBC Monitoring’s customers. You'll need to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the media environment, plus the political, cultural, religious and economic factors which are significant in this region.
You'll be willing and able to embrace new ways of working and new technology, constantly looking for ways to innovate.
Fluency in Arabic and English is essential with a very high standard of translation skills. We are seeking a skilled English language expert with extensive English editorial experience to develop and maintain high professional standards of English language across our output.
