We are seeking an individual with a strong background in mechanical design and engineering, including taking responsibility for the full development cycle. A background in mechanical design of mechatronics, precision design, or complex optical systems is desirable, as well as good complex mechanical system intuition.
- Mechanical design exposure to kinematics, dynamics, material properties and behavior, and structural analysis.
- Perform Thermal/FEA analysis. Validation of models by test (where possible).
- Basic experience with mechanical analytical techniques, including “first principle” engineering equations and Finite Element Analysis such as stress / strain / deformation, modal response, etc.
- Experience with 3D solid modeling for design conceptualization and realization.
- Drives full documentation of design including, BOM, drawings, and procedures.

**Key Responsibilities:
- Mechanical design of optical assemblies.
- Design mechanisms for positioning and aligning optics (translation, tip/tilt focus, and rotation).
- Designing mounts for prisms, gratings, mirrors, and other optical components.
- Calculating mechanical tolerance stack ups, specifically as they affect optical alignment.
- Analyze the mechanical and thermal stability of optical assemblies using FEA and other analytical tools.
- Contribute to the development of alignment and assembly processes.
- Collaborate with other engineering groups such as Optics engineers and Systems engineers on optical sub-assembly design.
- Collaborate with vendors on the fabrication of mechanical parts, mechanisms, and optics
- Other responsibilities may be added as business conditions arise

**Technical skills**:

- Proficient with CAD software. Inventor is preferred.
- Finite element tools, preferably ANSYS Mechanical.
- Finite Element Modeling experience (structural, thermal, vibration).
- Experience utilizing MATLAB
- Bonus skill: working knowledge of an optical ray trace software (Zemax, Oslo)
- Years of experience: 1-3 years

**Education**:
Bachelor or Master Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
