Purpose of Job
The Associate will work with the RPS team covering the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean Region (SEMED) to deliver the Bank's transition mandate, focusing on a subset of priority policy / thematic areas, in the particular region. While the Associate may have specific experience or qualifications (notably on the green economy transition), they will be expected to work flexibly across all the Bank's areas of focus and to contribute to a coherent and holistic policy agenda.
Accountabilities & Responsibilities
The range of accountabilities and responsibilities may include the following:
- Support RPL in monitoring and assessment of growth and reform progress in the region; support the development and implementation of policy dialogue workstreams in areas such as green transition, climate change & sustainability, economic governance, competitiveness, human capital, digitalisation, and capital markets development.
- Support work on transactions or projects, acting as a team member taking responsibility for tasks in relation to investments, policy initiative or analytical assignments.
- Support Banking in the delivery of specific investments (including participating in OpsCom and Board presentations), delivering defined policy projects or objectives or preparing a complex and comprehensive analytical assessment, notably those in support of EBRD's green strategy in the SEMED region.
- Monitor and analyse macroeconomic performance and risks
- Assess structural reform progress in the countries of the region to provide input into key Bank products, including the Regional Economic Prospects and the annual Transition Report.
- Support preparation of country diagnostics and preparation of country strategies
- Perform ad hoc assignments, including background research on macroeconomic, sectoral and other policy developments, drafting of briefings, presentations, and short analyses/focus pieces.
- Support preparation of regular growth forecasts and long-term macroeconomic scenarios to be used in the financial models by the Banking department.
- Support the RPL in the preparation of the Policy compacts for the region.
Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Qualifications
- Motivation – demonstrated strong commitment to, and understanding of, the Bank's transition agenda.
- Education – relevant education to at least degree level in economics (with understanding of economic theory, policy and practice), development policy, industrial business, engineering, environmental sciences, environmental or energy economics commerce or equivalent; or comparable professional experience.
- Experience – contributing to project management and to multi-disciplinary teams delivering projects; familiarity with emerging markets and transition economies; familiarity with finance and investment decision making; knowledge of climate-change and sustainability related policies.
- Communication – capacity to communicate complex policy and technical issues to a wide range of stakeholders verbally and in writing; ability to build consensus and reach agreement in complex, multi-stakeholder environments.
- Language/Technical – excellent written and spoken English. Familiarity with a language of the region (Arabic, French) would be very advantageous. Computer literate (advanced Excel, PowerPoint and Word).
