The World Health Organization seeks to fill a vacancy for a Regional Staff Counsellor, an exciting opportunity for a highly skilled and experienced professional to contribute to the organization's mission of promoting health, keeping the world safe, and serving the vulnerable.

Job Description

The successful candidate will provide a full range of counselling services to personnel in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, working closely with multidisciplinary teams to identify and address psychological risks at the individual, unit, and organizational levels. Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing individual and group counselling following self-referral or referral by the supervisor or another professional;
  • Identifying adequate local resources and facilitating referrals to external mental health professionals for psychological/psychiatric support whenever necessary;
  • Developing and implementing a comprehensive emergency personnel-focused mental health programme in collaboration with the Regional Staff Counsellor;
  • Ensuring timely and sensitive services to WHO staff and dependents after critical incidents and providing follow-up support as needed;
  • Working closely with multidisciplinary teams to identify and address psychological risks at the individual, unit, and organizational levels;
  • Providing guidance/support to managers and senior management on the management of staff where mental health conditions are involved and advising on emergency psycho-social support management for WHO workforce;
  • Supporting WHO staff with mental health conditions by providing rehabilitation strategies and return-to-work interventions;
  • Strengthening the network of Peer Support Volunteers (PSV), including training and technical supervision;
  • Employing a holistic approach to provide evidence-based psycho-social support to staff involved in critical incidents;
  • Facilitating evidence-based trauma-informed interventions for WHO staff and their dependents;
  • Coordinating with UNDSS, EMRO Regional Staff Counsellor, UN staff/stress counsellors, and Peer Support Volunteers to ensure adequate psycho-social support during emergencies;
  • Contributing to policies on staff mental health and well-being and performing administrative duties as required.

The ideal candidate will possess a postgraduate degree in psychology, counselling, clinical psychology, or a related field, with registration as a mental health professional and relevant experience working in international settings. The successful candidate will also have excellent communication skills, conflict resolution abilities, and a strong understanding of cultural differences. Proficiency in English is essential, with intermediate knowledge of Arabic desirable.
